The magnificent Benedictine Abbey at Corvey, 2 km northeast of the town, was one of the most important monasteries in Europe. Its architecture contains both Carolingian and Baroque elements. The poet Hoffmann von Fallersleben, who wrote Das Lied der Deutschen, worked here as a librarian and is buried next to the church.
